Health & Human Services
The Health and Human Services facet promotes and facilitates programs that support the maintenance of good health, and the elimination of chronic health disparities in communities of color through education, advocacy, and the optimal use of health resources. Health disparities and unequal health outcomes disproportionately affect communities of color and prevent the attainment of long life.
The areas of emphasis are cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, organ, tissue and bone marrow donation, mental health, oral health of children and adults, and HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. The organization’s signature programs, national initiatives, and national partnerships address disparities in these areas. They are:
HeartLinks – This signature program encourages Links members and communities to take an aggressive stance against heart disease, the number one killer of African American women.
Linkages to Life: Organ, Tissue and Bone Marrow Donation Awareness Program – Through this signature program, Links members and the African American community are educated about the importance of and need for organ, tissue, and bone marrow donation.
Walk for Healthy Living
This signature program teaches that healthy, sustained lifestyle changes can induce and reduce the incidence of many diseases.
Can You Imagine Me: The National Childhood Obesity Initiative is an evidence-based culturally tailored program and curriculum developed to introduce and reinforce messages about better nutritional habits and fitness practices with the objective of preventing and reversing the childhood obesity trend.
Links to Oral Health is a program partnership with the National Dental Association and the Colgate-Palmolive Company to improve the oral health of children and families.
Our Southern Area programmatic thrust for the Health & Human Services Facet is Links in Pink. Through this initiative we focus on education and awareness of Breast cancer in Black women. Our chapter members extend this outreach into the community with the ultimate goal of 1,946 mammograms performed under the Links in Pink banner during this administration
