Services to Youth programs are designed to empower black youth to use their intellect and spirit of achievement to become successful and productive citizens.

Area Intentional Focus

I READ, YOU READ, WE READ TOGETHER

Nearly two-thirds of kids couldn’t read on grade level nationwide. Now teachers are seeing students who are even further behind because of COVID-19 disruptions, especially those from low-income families. The pandemic worsened racial and ethnic gaps as well. Some estimate that U.S. students lost the equivalent of almost half a school year of reading instruction. (New York Times).

Focus:

  • Address the looming academic need to close the achievement gap in reading amongst children of color. The focus will be on elementary-aged children in third through fifth grade. Chapters are encouraged to continue working with other grade levels, but intensive focus should be on upper elementary students (i.e., pandemic babies).
